Harrogate

Key Chronology

1862	Line through Harrogate opened, connecting the former York and North Midland line from Church Fenton to the former Leeds and Thirsk line at Bilton Junction. A loop was opened at Pannal allowing Leeds and Thirsk line trains to serve Harrogate directly instead of requiring passengers to travel by road from Starbeck. The original York and North Midland terminus on the edge of the town at Brunswick closed, replaced by the new centrally located station; and the Dragon loop was opened allowing direct running from the new Harrogate station to Knaresborough.
1947	Harrogate North signal box opened by LNER as a replacement - there had been two previous boxes that carried this name.
1964	The line to Church Fenton closed.
1967	The link to Bilton Junction for the Starbeck to Melmerby section of Leeds and Thirsk line closed.
1981	Signal box renamed Harrogate on closure of Harrogate South signal box.
2012	Work station commissioned allowing Harrogate to replace Rigton and Horsforth signal boxes.
2024	Capacity improvements including bidrectional flexibility through Harrogate station and reinstatement of a siding.
